In 1936, this site became the stage for a moment of national significance. With a ceremony that captivated the entire country, the remains of Father Damien were transferred and laid to rest in the Saint Anthony Chapel. For generations, the site remained in the hands of the Flemish Fathers of the Sacred Hearts, better known as the Picpus Fathers. But times change, and with the sale of the estate, a new chapter has begun.

The Picpus Fathers will receive a new, adapted living space, so that they can continue to reside here in comfort. A multifunctional space will be created for community initiatives—a place designed for connection. We’re also building 95 student units, including accessible studios for students with disabilities, in partnership with KU Leuven—because inclusion starts with a place where everyone feels at home.

Heritage deserves respect, not compromise. The historical buildings are being preserved wherever possible: the monastery, the townhouses, the site’s core structure. Even the iconic roof structure of the former printing house is being assessed for reuse. And the true heart of the site? That remains the monastery garden. Once a place of silence, it will become a place of connection—surrounded by both history and future.
