De Poort
About the building
The refuge on Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat is one of the most valuable heritage sites in the centre of Mechelen. The complex dates back in part to the 15th century and belonged until the end of the 19th century to Grimbergen Abbey, which provided lodging for travelling monks. It later served as a girls' school. The stately, classicist gate building gives the complex its new name: De Poort. Triginta is restoring the site under a long-term lease from the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels.
