The Koningstraat in Ghent is lined with striking façades. But how many people know what lies behind that of the Huis van Oombergen? Since 2022, Triginta has held the long-term lease on this listed monument. Not just a townhouse, but a building that has been a hub for language and culture for over a century. Since 1892, it has housed KANTL—the Royal Academy for Dutch Language and Literature, a cultural institution that promotes study, reflection and debate on the Dutch language and its literary tradition.

A Rococo gem by architect David ’t Kindt. A touch of classicism added in a later phase, and an eclectic extension to complete the picture. Architecture that has grown with the times. In 1892, the building was acquired by the Belgian State, which restored and expanded it. In 2005, it was transferred to a private leaseholder—until it became part of Triginta’s portfolio in 2022.

Why? Not just because of its strategic location or long-term lease agreements. Its true value lies in its history—and in the structures that have stood the test of time. But heritage demands more than preservation. In 2025, Triginta is partnering with KANTL and the Flemish Government to improve the building’s energy performance—a challenge within the strict framework of monument protection, but essential to securing its future.

And then comes the next chapter. In November 2025, the building will welcome a new resident: the ‘Lage Landen’ foundation will move into the Huis van Oombergen as a sub-tenant of the Flemish Government. A Dutch-Flemish cultural organisation that brings together art, language, history, and literature. A perfect match.
